The Battle Of Gettysburg
The battle of Gettysburg took place in southern Pennsylvania from July1st to July 3rd, 1863. This battle is known as a large battle in the American Civil War (1861-1865). This battle is happened to be named after the town that was designated on the battlefield. The Union General, George G. Meade, was the leader of an army of approximately 90,000 men to battle against the Confederate General, Robert E. Lee's, army. Lee's army had about 75,000 soldiers, but that didnt help him win, and victory was given to the Union army. The Confederate army had about 28,000 casualties and the Union had nearly 23,000 casualties. Even though, many lives were lost in this battle, it's signifcance for fighting for freedom to give to the citizens and to allow American citizens to run self-government, was all that really mattered.
Some interesting facts about the battle of Gettysburg was that there were nearly 23,000 casualties on the Union side (3,155 dead, 14,529 injured, and 5,365 missing). As for the Confederate side for having 28,000 (3,903 dead, 18,735 injured, and 5,425 missing). Another fact is that, it's estimated that 569 tons of ammunitions were fired during the 3 days of fighting. Also, that there was fatal accident when an anonymous bullet went through the door of a house, and killed 20 year-old Mary Virginia (Jenny) Wade. Yet, she was the only civilian that was killed during the battle.
