The Battle of Antietam
The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862 and was fought at Antietam Creek near the village Sharpsburg, in Maryland. It is considered one the bloodiest single-day battle of the Civil War. In early September, General Robert E. Lee, who was the leader of the Confederate army, to Maryland. He had an idea to invade the North to bombard for supplies. General Robert E. Lee and Union army leader, George McClellan, then fought a battle. In the end, the Union won the victory, 1,546 Confederate soldiers died as well as 2,108 Union soldiers. In comparison, 7,754 Confederate and 9,549 Union men were wounded.
